Men's Soccer Advances To SUNYAC Semifinals With 2-0 Win At Potsdam

Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year midfielder Kevin McGrath scored his second goal on the season to lead the Knights past host Potsdam, 2-0, in the first round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, Saturday afternoon.

Fifth-seeded Geneseo will battle top-seeded Oneonta in the semifinals on Wednesday (Nov. 5th) at 1 p.m. During the regular season, the Knights fell at home to the Red Dragons, 2-1.

"It was a great win for us today. We got off to a bit of a slow start but after the first 15-20 minutes we controlled much of play and I was really impressed with our second half performance," said head coach Dominic Oliveri. "We could have just come out and played defensively but we came out and went after it. We're playing well at the right time and now we're onto the next game."

In the 25th minute, McGrath scored on a header in a crowded box off a corner kick by senior midfielder Neil Allen to give Geneseo a 1-0 lead which held into halftime.

In the 70th minute, Allen found the back of the net after he collected a loose ball in the box and drilled a shot from 10 yards out.

Junior keeper Logan Calvey collected three saves to preserve the team's ninth shutout of the season as the Knights outshot the Bears, 21-9, and held them to zero corner kicks.
