No. 23 Women's Soccer Downs Elmira, 5-1

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Jori Semrau scored the first of the Knights' four goals in the second half as the team defeats Elmira, 5-1, Wednesday afternoon at Saratoga Field.

"While we had many opportunities offensively in the first period, we needed to be much sharper and cleaner," said head coach Nate Wiley. "It was good to see the team make adjustments at halftime and capitalize on them. Elmira turned up the pressure on us but we were very proficient with the ball and remained solid defensively."

In the 43rd minute, first-year midfielder Leah Greene scored for the third-straight game after she took a cross by senior midfielder Erin Froehlich from the right sideline for the one-goal lead at the half.

The Knights took control in the second period, scoring three goals in ten minutes. In the 61st minute, Semrau found the back left corner of the net from six yards out after taking a cross from sophomore midfielder Laurie Knapp.

Froehlich handed out her second assist of the game when she delivered a pass from the right sideline to junior forward Kelsey Raschke for the score in the 68th minute to put Geneseo up, 3-0.

In the 71st minute, first-year forward Jamie Forken tallied her first collegiate goal when sophomore midfielder Emily Green fed her the ball in traffic for a low 10-yard shot.

The Soaring Eagles got on the board in the 77th minute when sophomore midfielder Maddie Miller set up senior back Alexa Barber with a pass to the left post for the easy score.

First-year midfielder Kaitlin Shea recorded her first goal in a Geneseo uniform in the 84th minute. Shea gathered the ball from Green and hit a shot on the ground past the Soaring Eagles' diving keeper.

Senior keeper Allison Stamp was called upon to only make one save as Elmira sophomore keeper Amanda Banner collected 12 saves in the loss. The Knights outshot the Soaring Eagles by a margin of 25-2.

Geneseo continued its best start since the 1994 squad jumped out to an identical 10-2-1 record en route to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals.

The Knights return to action Saturday when they host conference foe Brockport for a match at 1 p.m.
