Men's Soccer Falls To No. 5 Oneonta, 2-1

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Connor Beisner capitalized on a penalty kick to keep the Knights in the game but it was No. 5 Oneonta who came away with the 2-1 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Field.

The Red Dragons (9-0-2, 3-0-1 SUNYAC) struck first in the 9th minute of play when sophomore midfielder Hans Purtell received a pass from junior forward Jake Sutherland at the top of the box and laid off a shot on the ground past Geneseo junior keeper Logan Calvey for the score.

In the 37th minute, Oneonta first-year forward Cory Santangelo dribbled by Calvey after he had come out to block a shot on the previous play and was unable to recover.

Despite playing into the wind and being down 2-0 in the second half, the Knights executed stronger plays offensively and maintained possession well. In the 79th minute, Beisner stepped up and scored a penalty kick after Red Dragons' keeper Daniel DeBottis was given a yellow card in the box.

Geneseo battled for another scoring opportunity but Oneonta's defense held their ground to finish the contest with a 2-1 win. Calvey collected two saves as the team was outshot by the Red Dragons, 12-11.

The Knights (6-5-1, 2-2-0 SUNYAC) return to action next Wednesday for a non-conference road match-up at RIT, scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
