Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Trevor Hills scored two goals while senior forward Tyler Brickler added a goal and an assist to lead the Knights to a season-opening 4-1 victory at Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey play, Friday.
Playing in his first game in a Geneseo uniform after transferring from Division-I St. Lawrence, Hills tallied a short-handed goal at 12:25 of the first period off an assist from sophomore forward Connor Anthoine to start a 3-0 run for the Knights (1-0, 1-0 SUNYAC).
Brickler, the team's leading scorer during their run to the NCAA Semifinals a season ago, tallied his first goal of the season exactly two minutes later off an assist by sophomore winger Stephen Collins. Hills then made the Mustangs pay for a illegal checking minor with a power play tally off helpers from Brickler and senior forward Justin Scharfe with 2:56 left in the opening period as the visitors carried a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
Geneseo out-shot Morrisville, 11-4, in the second period, but neither team converted any chances heading into the third period.
In the final period. senior winger Ryan Stanimir coverted a Collins feed to make it a 4-0 lead for the Knights with 14:47 left to play. The Mustangs avoided the shutout with a power-play goal of their own by Layne Martin with 6:31 remaining, but it wasn't enough.
Geneseo junior goalie Nick Horrigan made 13 saves to earn his first victory of the season as the Knights finished with a 29-14 advantage in shots.
The Knights will take on host Morrisville on Saturday night to complete the two-game set. Face-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
