Men's Soccer Tops New Paltz, 3-1, For Third-Straight Win

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior back Terence McGovern scored after two minutes of play as the Knights defeated New Paltz, 3-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Friday afternoon, for their third-straight victory.

"The wind was a big difference today so we were glad to start the game with it at our backs and get three goals with that advantage," said head coach Dominic Oliveri. "We defended really well in the second half even though we were playing into the wind. Our confidence has been a big reason for our most recent wins and our success offensively."

Geneseo got on the board in the third minute when McGovern leaped above the Hawks' defenders and headed the ball over senior keeper Steve Domino off of a corner kick by senior midfielder Neil Allen.

In the 22nd minute, junior back Brad Campion put Geneseo up 2-0 when he got the rebound in the middle of the box after Domino saved a bending corner kick by Allen. Within the same minute, senior forward Jason Iannone received a long pass up the middle of the field from junior back Chris Kanaval and drilled the ball into the lower left side of the goal.

New Paltz (3-6-1, 0-2-1 SUNYAC) tallied its only goal of the contest in the 32nd minute when first-year forward Aleco Podias hit a shot into the top right corner of the net off an assist from junior back Dondre Irving. The Knights took a 3-1 lead into halftime, taking 16 shots to the Hawks' two.

Despite playing with the wind and stringing together more offensive opportunities in the second half, New Paltz was unable to find the back of the net and Geneseo's defense remained strong to preserve the two-goal lead.

Junior keeper Logan Calvey collected two saves as the Knights finished with a 23-5 margin in shots.

Geneseo (6-4-1, 2-1-0 SUNYAC) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when No. 5 Oneonta comes to town for a match-up at 1 p.m.
