Field Hockey Takes Down St. John Fisher, 2-1

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year Cara Stafford notched a goal and an assist to lead the Knights to a 2-1 victory over visiting St. John Fisher in field hockey action, Wednesday afternoon.

Geneseo (8-10) scored the only goal of the first half after Stafford took a short pass from first-year forward Emma Dempsey during a scramble in front of the Cardinal net and scored from close range in the 29th minute.

The Knights made it a two-goal edge in the 42nd minute after Stafford took an open 15-yard run on goal from the right side and dished a cross to first-year forward Diana Ruggiero, who flicked a high shot inside the left post for her first collegiate goal.

St. John Fisher (11-6) pulled back within a goal in the 53rd minute after Marissa Vedella collected a long rebound off the pads of Geneseo junior goalie Dayna Mercer and scored on a six-yard shot from directly in front of the cage.

The Cardinals picked up the pace in search of the equalizer in the final 17 minutes, outshooting the Knights, 18-9, for the game, but Mercer's eight total saves helped preserve the victory.

Geneseo closes out the regular season on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. faceoff at Rochester, before playing in the semifinals of the State University of New  York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament at Cortland next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
