Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Cara Stafford scored a goal and an assist while junior forward Sarah Malinak added three assists to lead the Knights past Brockport, 4-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey play, Wednesday.
Geneseo (5-8, 2-2 SUNYAC) scored the only two goals of the first half during a three-minute span to take an early lead with just over 12 minutes elapsed. Senior midfielder Ashley Favata received a short pass from Stafford during a scramble in front of the Brockport net and scored from close range in the 10th minute before senior defender Cathryn Menarchem scored on a 10-yard drive inside the right post after Malinak carried the ball into the zone and fed a nice cross from the left side in the 13th. Geneseo held a 16-4 advantage in shots after the first 35 minutes of play.
The Knights found the net two more times in the second half to put the game out of reach. Stafford got open behind Brockport goalie Lindsey Farrell and finished off a short pass from Malinak in the 55th minute. In the 63rd minute, Malinak took an eight-yard shot from the right side that deflected off a Brockport defender's stick directly to junior forward Kailey Suhr, who scored on a short shot inside the left post.
Geneseo finished with a 23-17 edge in shots, while junior goalie Dayna Mercer stopped nine shots to earn her first shutout of the season. Farrell was credited with eight saves, including seven in the first half, in the loss.
The Knights return to action on Friday, traveling to SUNYAC-leading Cortland for a 4:00 p.m. face-off with the Red Dragons.
