No. 12/14 Ice Hockey Overwhelms Hamilton, 5-1

Box Score

CLINTON, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior winger Zachary Vit scored two goals while junior forward Justin Scharfe added a goal and two assists to lead the No. 12/14 Knights to a 5-1 victory over Hamilton, Friday night. All six goals were scored in the first period.

"I thought we executed our game plan very efficiently in the first period and we were able to capitalize on our chances," said head coach Chris Schultz. "I also thought we were very good in all three zones tonight."

Geneseo grabbed a 1-0 lead at 7:29 of the first on sophomore forward AJ Sgaraglio's unassisted goal, and junior forward Tyler Brickler made it 2-0 just 1:19 later on assists from Scharfe and first-year forward Stephen Collins. The Knights had a three-goal cushion at 10:46 when Scharfe scored from sophomore defenseman Matt Solomon.

Hamilton called a timeout to regroup, but Geneseo scored again 59 seconds later. This time it was Vit from sophomore forwad David Ripple and junior defenseman Jack Caradonna.

The Knights were whistled for a five-minute major for hitting from behind with 7:44 left in the first, and Hamilton took advantage of the ensuing long power play to score their lone goal of the night. Truman Landowski made it 4-1 with 3:51 remaining.

Vit rounded out the scoring with a power-play goal after passes from Scharfe and Caradonna with 38.3 seconds to go in the first.

Sophomore Nick Horrigan improved to 5-1 on the season, making 13 stops in two periods of play. First-year Matt Leon played the final 20 minutes of action, making 14 saves to keep the Continentals off the board in his first appearance of the season.

For the evening, Geneseo ended up 1-for-5 on the power play while stopping five of Hamilton's six extra-man opportunities. The Knights enjoyed a 47-28 shot advantage.

Geneseo will look to make it four in a row tomorrow night, hosting Nazareth at 7:00 p.m. at Wilson Ice Arena. The Knights picked up a 3-2 victory over the Golden Flyers on Dec. 15 in a game played at Frontier Field in Rochester, N.Y.
