Women's Basketball Comes Up Short With Cortland, 62-60

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Genseo junior forward Shannon McGinnis totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore guard Dana Cohan scores 15 points, but it was Cortland holding on for a 62-60 victory over the Knights in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball play, Friday night.

"I thought we played significantly better in the second half which was encouraging," said Geneseo head coach Scott Hemer. "However, until this group learns to play more consistently for a full 40 minutes, we are simply not going to meet the goals we set out to achieve at the beginning of the year."

Geneseo made up a 28-23 halftime deficit with a 6-0 run to start the second half before the teams traded punches back and forth until the final minutes of the game. Geneseo took a 58-56 lead on a jumper by sophomore center Allison McKenna with 1:45 left, but Cortland tied the game when senior guard Megan Touhey hit a shot from the right wing with 1:19 remaining. The Knights missed a shot on their next trip down the floor, before junior guard Lindsey Minor gave the Red Dragons the lead when she drove across the lane from the left side and hit a contested layup with 44 seconds to play.

After a Geneseo missed three-pointer, the Knights would immediately foul before Cortland sank the ensuing two free throws with 17 seconds left to go up four. The Knights, however, cut their deficit to two on a McKenna layup with nine seconds remaining. Cortland missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with six seconds left, but Geneseo turned the ball over in the closing seconds while driving toward the basket for a potential game-tying shot.

Geneseo hits the road on Saturday looking to break its two-game slide against Oswego. Tip-off with the Lakers is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
