Women's Basketball Falls To Buffalo State, 77-64

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Shannon McGinnis totaled a team-high 20 points and eight rebounds, but it was Buffalo State pulling away in the second half for a 85-68 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball play, Tuesday night.

The Knights clung to a one-point lead, 33-32, at halftime, but weren't  able to recover from 20 turnovers (including 12 in the second half) that the Bengals turned into 24 points en route to the victory.

"I felt we made strides in several areas that we have been stressing the need for improvement," said head coach Scott Hemer. "However, we failed to capitalize on many of the opportunities we had to get back into the game as Buffalo State did a good job of out-hustling us for a few stretches which ultimately hurt us."

Trailing by one, 38-37, with 15:52 on the second-half clock, Buffalo State went on a 14-4 run over the next seven minutes to take a 51-42 lead with 9:09 to play in regulation.  McGinnis would hit a free throw to complete a three-point play to pull the Knights back within six, 51-45, with 8:18 showing, but a 9-2 Bengal run put the visitors back up by a 13-point cushion, 60-47, at the 5:47 mark. The Knights were never able to cut the deficit to less than 10 the rest of the way as the Bengals clinched their fifth-straight conference victory.

Buffalo State forward Staci McElroy led all scorers with 21 points to lead five Bengals in double-figure scoring.

Geneseo (7-3, 1-2 SUNYAC) continues conference play on Friday, hosting Cortland at 6:00 p.m. before traveling to Oswego on Saturday for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off with the Lakers.
