Women's Basketball Overcomes Potsdam, 65-51

Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore guard Dana Cohan scored a game-high 16 points while junior center Katie Peterson added 13 points to lead the Knights to a 65-51 victory at Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball action, Saturday.

The game was pushed back over an hour from its original tip-off time of 2:00 p.m. and was moved to nearby Clarkson after the ceiling at Potsdam's Maxcy Gymnasium started leaking. Geneseo head coach Scott Hemer was also not on the sidelines for the Knights after being felled by the flu earlier in the day.

"Despite numerous circumstances that could have been a distraction, I thought our players did a great job of just focusing on basketball and bouncing back from a tough loss last night," said Shawn Monahan, who picked up his fifth win serving as interim head coach over his nearly 10 years as an assistant with the team. "I thought they did a great job, especially in the second half, of pounding the ball inside to our post players which helped our perimeter players get open for some good shots. They also did well taking care of the ball with Potsdam pressing the whole game."

The two teams jockeyed back and forth in the early going. Trailing by one, 9-8, at 13:26, a pair of free throws by first-year forward Katie Vienneau started a 10-0 Knights' run over the next five minutes that put the visitors up, 18-9, with 8:26 on the clock.

Cohan and first-year forward Bridgit Ryan each had seven points as Geneseo built a 31-23 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Bears (3-8, 1-3 SUNYAC) would get within six, 33-27, with 15:58 on the second half clock but the Knights would slowly pull away, building their lead to as many as 14 down the stretch.

Geneseo (7-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) out-rebounded Potsdam, 46-34, including a 35-21 advantage on the defensive boards, to bounce back from a 62-51 loss at Plattsburgh on Friday night that saw the Knights get out-rebounded (33-32) for only the second time this season.

Geneseo returns home to host Buffalo State on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. in Schrader Gymnasium.
