Women's Volleyball Splits Two Matches At Golden Flyer Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Morton garnered all-tournament honors after leading the Knights to a 2-2 overall mark at the Golden Flyer Invitational, which wrapped up Saturday. Following a tough 3-2 (25-12, 16-25, 18-25, 27-25, 15-10) loss to RIT to start off day-two of the tournament, Geneseo (4-4) held on for a 3-2 (25-15, 28-26, 22-25, 18-25, 15-13) victory over Scranton to wrap up the weekend.

Morton compiled a season-high 19 kills to go along with 12 digs to notch her second-straight double-double effort. Four other players totaled double-figure kills as first-year outside hitter Tricia Baxley (12), first-year right side (11) first-year middle blocker Courtney Cleary (10) and sophomore middle blocker Paige Pendleton (10) led the attack.

"We are getting more consistent and holding off Scranton was a great win to end the weekend on," said head coach Jen Salmon. "We were able to establish our middles today which opened up the outside for our hitters and gave us the ability to run more of a diverse offense. I'm very happy with the direction we are going."

Sophomore setter Erika Dannenfelser was credited with 37 kills, while sophomore defensive specialist Samantha Holdredge and first-year Dani Sayler added 19 and 15 digs, respectively, to the winning effort.

"I thought Tricia (Baxley) played extremely well and was also very happy with the way Paige (Pendleton) and Courtney (Cleary) stood out. Erika (Dannenfelser) also forced the middle a lot more today and made some great decisions."

In the day's first match, Morton compiled a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, leading three Knights with double-digit kills. Baxley led the way with 12 followed first-year right side Emma Lannon's 11. Dannenfelser compiled 41 assists while Sayler chipped in 14 digs in the loss.

Morton, who compiled a .357 hitting percentage, also added three service aces to the cause.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Knights fell into a quick 6-1 hole. A 5-3 run that included a Baxley kill and two RIT hitting errors pulled Geneseo back within three, 9-6, but a 5-1 RIT spurt put the Knights on their heels, 14-7. Geneseo scored three straight points to pull back within four, 14-10, but one last RIT kill sealed the Tigers' victory.

On Friday, Geneseo defeated Hilbert, 3-0, before falling to host Nazareth, 3-0, on day-one of the tournament.

The Knights return to the court next Friday and Saturday at the Ducks Tournament, hosted by Stevens Tech (N.J.) where they will square off against FDU-Florham, Kean (N.J.) and host Stevens throughout the weekend.
