Men's Soccer Falls Short at St. Lawrence, 2-1, In 2OT

Box Score

CANTON, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Jason Iannone tallied his first goal of the season while senior goalkeeper Dan Maddock made eight saves, but it was host St. Lawrence outlasting the Knights in a 2-1 double-overtime decision, Saturday afternoon.

"We got off to a pretty slow start in the first half. We struggled to cover our marks and they capitalized," said head coach Dominic Oliveri. "I thought we came out strong in the second half and really changed the momentum by creating some good scoring chances. While we didn't get the result, I thought we still played well against a quality opponent."

The Saints took an early lead as  Daniel Hunt made a sliding play on a free kick, redirecting Morgan Smith's kick toward the left post into the lower right corner off a restart 11:42 into the game.

With 11:06 remaining in regulation, Ianone took a shot from 10 yards in front of the goal that deflected off a Saints defender and into the goal.  St. Lawrence nearly regained the lead with 3:30 to go in regulation when a shot by Mark Prevost off a free kick was knocked out of play off the crossbar by Maddock.

After a scoreless first overtime, St. Lawrence scored the game winner on a 2-on-1 break on Maddock to clinch the victory.

Geneseo kicks off the home portion of the 2013 schedule, hosting Ithaca next Saturday (Sept. 14) at 3:00 p.m.
