Men's Soccer Takes Down Fredonia in OT, 3-2

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior back Pat Lynch scored the game-winning goal, while senior forward Ryan Yurchak scored two goals to lift the Knights to a 3-2 win over Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at Saratoga Field, Saturday.

Eight minutes into overtime, Lynch sent a looping ball into the right corner of the goal on a free kick from 30 yards out to send the Knights to their second-consecutive OT victory to start conference play. Geneseo also defeated Buffalo State, 3-2, in overtime on Friday night.

"Protecting your home field is the most important thing in conference play, and having two wins is a great way to start," said Geneseo head coach Dominic Oliveri. "It can be tough to get motivated for the second of back-to-back games and the team with the most energy is generally going to win. I thought we had intensity throughout. We needed Yurchak to get going and his hard work paid off."

The Knights (4-4-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) began by scoring in the 10th minute as Yurchak converted a shot from 18 yards out for his first goal of the season.

The Blue Devils (3-8-0, 0-2 SUNYAC) responded with a goal of their own in the 25th minute. Chase Lipshie sent in a cross from the right, which was headed by Luke Tylutki. Early in the second half, the Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead after Geneseo goalie Dan Maddock made a save off a corner kick, but Niall Curran controlled the rebound and sent a shot into the center of the net for a goal.

The Knights nearly tied the game in the 58th minute after senior forward Craig Schackner seemingly tied the game after scoring on a wide-open net after a scramble in front of the Fredonia goal, but his shot glanced off a teammate and the Knights were called offsides. However, in the 63rd minute, sophomore forward Stanley Egbuchulam shot a ball off the post and Yurchak scored off the rebound for his second goal of both the game and the season.

After playing nearly shot-for-shot for the rest of the second half (13-11), the Knights outshot the Blue Devils 3-0 in overtime, leading up to the decisive goal by Lynch.

The Knights will continue home field play by hosting Nazareth on Tuesday (Oct. 1) at 4:00pm.
