Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior captain Bridget McGovern scored the game-winning goal 4:13 into overtime to lift the visiting Knights to a 1-0 field hockey win over St. Lawrence, Saturday, at Hall/Leet Stadium.
McGovern's goal came following a penalty corner with the teams playing seven-on-seven in the extra period. Saints' goalkeeper Nicole Matos made her 17th save of the afternoon, but McGovern collected the rebound and tucked it inside the post to end the game. Geneseo almost won it a minute earlier on its first corner attempt of the extra period, but McGovern's shot banged off the post and stayed out of the net as play continued.
Geneseo compiled a 33-16 edge in shots, including a second half where they outshot the Saints, 16-5, but Matos stymied the Knights on several occasions throughout both halves of play to force overtime. Geneseo sophomore goalie Dayna Mercer also registered another strong performance, logging eight saves to preserve her first shutout of the season.
The Knights will play their first home match of the season on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Utica for a 4:00 p.m. faceoff.
