Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Craig Schackner headed home the game-winning goal in the 66th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Knights to a 2-1 victory over visiting Ithaca College Saturday in their home opener at Saratoga Field.
"We could have been sharper, but, we still managed to get the result despite being down a goal early," said head coach Dominic Oliveri. "We started off slow and I thought we could have been a bit more technical, but we played well enough to win."
Ithaca College took the early lead in the game, scoring a mere six minutes into the game off an unassisted goal scored by first-year forward Sean Forward. Seven minutes later, the Knights were credited with the equalizer on an own-goal as junior back Tyler Chauncey's shot was misplayed by an Ithaca defenseman and deflected into the net to tie the game 1-1 in the 13th minute.
The game remained tied well into the second half, until Schackner scored on a header on a cross into the box from junior midfielder Connor Beisner for the eventual game-winner with 24:22 left on the clock.
Next up for the Knights will be an away-match against Rochester on Tuesday (Sept. 17th) at 7:00 PM.
