Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. - Despite second-half goals by senior forward Kerry Hosford and sophomore midfielder Elena Hingston, SUNY Geneseo couldn't dig itself out of a four-goal deficit in a 5-2 loss at No. 10 William Smith, Tuesday.
Sophomore goalie Dayna Mercer totaled 15 saves, including nine in the second half, as the Herons (3-0) out-shot the Knights by a 26-9 margin.
William Smith got on the board early, tallying a goal in the sixth minute, before the teams played over 25 minutes of scoreless field hockey. The Herons broke the stretch with a goal off a penalty corner in the 31st minute to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Consecutive goals in a seven-minute span staked William Smith to a 4-0 lead with 19:26 left in the second half. Hingston broke the shutout on a penalty corner attempt off an assist from senior back Bridget McGovern just under seven minutes later.
Hosford pulled the Knights within two after deflecting a shot by sophomore forward Kailey Suhr past the Heron keeper to make it a 4-2 game with 7:27 to play, but the home team converted a penalty corner attempt exactly a minute later to put the game out of reach.
Geneseo (2-2) will be back at it on Saturday when the squad travels to St. Lawrence for a noon faceoff in Canton, N.Y.
