Field Hockey Bounces Back With 7-2 Victory Over Wilkes

Box Score

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Kayla DeAngelis scored four points with three goals and an assist as the Knight defeated host Wilkes, 7-2, in the consolation game of the Colonel Classic, Saturday.

Wilkes (0-2) got on the board just 1:19 into the contest but Geneseo (1-1) responded by scoring six of the game's next seven goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead into intermission. In the second half, sophomore goalkeeper Dayna Mercer made nine of her 10 total saves to hold Wilkes scoreless en route to the team's first victory of the season.

"I am very pleased with the way we came back today, not only from being down early in the game, but also from yesterday's loss," said head coach Jess Seren. "We generated a lot scoring opportunities and were able to capitalize on several occasions. Being down early was a good test for us and it was good to see the players pull together, rally and never look back."

Trailing 1-0, DeAngelis started the Knights' comeback by scoring an unassisted goal on a breakaway with 27:13 on the clock. Senior forward Kerry Hosford then finished another breakaway by taking a feed from sophomore forward Sarah Malinak and converting from close range to put Geneseo ahead, 2-1, at the 24:46 mark.

Wilkes would tie the game with a goal 2:12 later, but four unanswered goals over the next 22 minutes put the game out of reach. Malinak would net her first collegiate goal, assisted by DeAngelis, at the 19:00 mark, before Senior captain Bridget McGovern would collect her own rebound off a saved shot and score to make it a 4-2 Knight edge at 15:02.

DeAngelis then scored unassisted on a breakaway off the right post with 5:45 left in the half, before sophomore Elena Hingston converted a shot from the top of the circle with a minute left on the clock to give the Knights the 6-2 edge at intermission.

DeAngelis completed the hat trick off an assist from Hosford with 13:26 on the clock for the only goal of the second half.

Geneseo returns to action with a road match at Washington & Jefferson next Saturday, Sept. 7. Faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m. in Pennsylvania.
