No. 12/14 Ice Hockey Shoots Past Fredonia, 4-3, In SUNYAC Action

Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Zachary Vit and first-year forward Stephen Collins each scored two goals to lead the No. 12/14 Knights to the 4-3 comeback win over Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) ice hockey action.

Trailing, 3-2, after 40 minutes of hockey, Collins tied the score with a tally 25 seconds into the period to knot the game, 3-3. Vit then scored the deciding goal in the 10th minute to send the Knights (8-2, 7-1 SUNYAC) to their fourth-consecutive victory.

"I thought our energy level was down compared to last night, which is to be expected during the second game of a two-day road swing," said head coach Chris Schultz. "There was a small part of me that was glad we were down early as well as going into the third period as you really get to see what a team is made of when it is faced with adversity."

Fredonia (2-7-2, 2-3-2 SUNYAC) got on the board only 11 seconds into the game following a turnover in the Knights' end due to a mis-communication between sophomore goalkeeper Nick Horrigan and the Knights defense.

Collins got Geneseo on the board seven minutes later with a tally off an assist from junior winger Ryan Stanimir before Vit scored a power-play goal 10 minutes later, assisted by Stanimir and junior centerman Tyler Brickler, that gave the Knights a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Fredonia forward Jared Wynia scored two unanswered goals in the second period, including a power-play tally after only 49 seconds, to give the Blue Devils the lead at the second intermission.

Horrigan was credited with 20 saves to pick up his second win of the season as the Knights built a 37-20 advantage in shots by the end of the night.

Geneseo will finish the first half of the season before heading into winter break with an outdoor showdown against Nazareth next Sunday as part of the Frozen Frontier event at Frontier Field in Rochester. Faceoff is set for noon.
