Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Shannon McGinnis scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds, but it was host Roberts Wesleyan holding off the Knights, 44-41, in the championship game of the 21st-Annual Wendy's College Classic.
It was Geneseo's second-straight and fourth overall championship game appearance in the 21 years of the tournament. The Knights also fell, 60-58, in the 2012 final. McGinnis was named a first-team all-tournament selection for the second season in a row, while sophomore forward Allison McKenna also lauded first-team all-tournament selection.
Geneseo took a 9-3 lead on back-to-back baskets by junior center Katie Peterson with 11:14 on the clock, but the Red Hawks would out-score the Knights 12-3 to finish the low-scoring first half.
Both teams only hit five field goals apiece, combining to shoot 10-of-62 from the floor.The two teams picked up the shooting in the second half. Trailing 25-18 with 14:10 to play, McGinnis hit a pair of free throws to start a 12-5 Knights run finished off by a three-pointer by junior guard Biz Reinhardt that tied the game, 30-30, with 9:26 to play.
Reinhardt would give the Knights a 39-37 lead on a layup after a stealing a Red Hawk pass with 5:00 to play in the game. Roberts Wesleyan would respond with a 5-0 outburst to lead 42-39 with 2:12 to play.
A Reinhardt rebound and layup with 35 seconds to play cut the deficit to one, 42-41, but a jumper in the lane by Samantha Courtney put the top-seeded Red Hawks up three with eight seconds on the clock.
A last second three-point attempt fell short as the Knights had their five-game winning streak to start the season snapped.
The Knights will take the rest of the month off for December break before returning to action on Jan. 3 to host Misericordia at 7:00 p.m.
