Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Sarah Malinak scored a goal but it was New Paltz picking up a 3-1 victory in the semifinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Field Hockey Tournament, Friday.
Seniors Kerry Hosford and Kim Sherman were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Knights.
New Paltz scored the only goal of the first half 6:53 on the clock. The Hawks put together a three-shot flurry that Knights' sophomore goalkeeper Dayna Mercer was able to fend off until a rebound finally squirted out to Danielle Conklin who found the net from close range.
New Paltz took a two-goal lead 3:09 into the second half as Conklin sent a short pass into the box from the right side that Dani Ackerman one-timed inside the right post.
Geneseo got on the board with just over 20 minutes on the second-half clock. Following a penalty corner, Malinak scored on a seven yard shot after a short pass from senior back Bridget McGovern in front of the goal.
New Paltz put the match out of reach eight minutes later on a penalty corner of their own as Lauren Link blasted home a long shot from 13 yards out to make it the 3-1 final.
Geneseo (13-7) had its five-match winning streak snapped as the third-seeded Hawks advance to Saturday's SUNYAC Championship match against top-seeded and host Cortland with the victory.
