GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior winger Zachary Vit scored two goals while junior winger Ryan Stanimir and junior centerman Tyler Brickler each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Knights to the 7-4 victory over visiting Cortland and their second State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory of the weekend.
"We didn't play our sharpest game tonight, but I was happy with the way we kept after them the whole game," said Geneseo head coach Chris Schultz. "Cortland is a tough team and has some talented forwards, and I thought we did a pretty good job of limiting their opportunities."
The two teams traded two goals apiece to finish the first intermission tied 2-2. Brickler scored a power-play goal 7:09 into the game, before Cortland's Chris Marinakos answered two minutes later. Geneseo senior forward Jonathan Sucese scored a short-handed goal on a tremendous end-to-end individual effort to put the Knights back up, 2-1, with a minute to play in the period. The Red Dragons however converted the extra-man attempt with 29 second on the clock to knot the game after 20 minutes of play.
Geneseo (6-2, 5-1 SUNYAC) broke the game open with three unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the second period, started by a shorthanded tally by Vit for his 100th career point in a Knights' uniform 1:43 into the period. Stanimir got into the action with a tally 5:12 into the period, before sophomore defenseman AJ Sgaraglio tallied to make it a 5-2 Knights' edge with 12:38 to play in the period.
Cortland (3-3-1, 3-3-1 SUNYAC) would get one back with less than two minutes on the clock to finish the period down two, 5-3, but Geneseo would outscore the Red Dragons 2-1 in the final period on a goal by Vit with 2:17 elapsed and alter on the first collegiate tally by first-year forward Jack Ceglarski with under 5:00 minutes to play to lead the Knights to their second win in as many nights after also beating No. 6 Oswego, 7-4, on Friday.
Junior goalkeeper Bryan Haude was solid in between the pipes with 30 saves to notch his fourth game with at least 30 saves in his last five outings.
Geneseo will be off for two weeks before returning to action on Dec. 6 at Buffalo State and Dec. 7 at Fredonia. Both games are scheduled to faceoff at 7:00 p.m.
