Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior winger Justin Scharfe scored two goals and added an assist to lead the No. 15 Knights to a 7-4 victory over No. 8 Oswego, Friday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) ice hockey action.
Geneseo (5-2, 4-1 SUNYAC) defeated the Lakers (3-2, 2-2 SUNYAC) for the first time since earning a 3-1 victory on Feb. 20, 2010. Playing their third-straight game versus a ranked opponent, the Knights also defeated former No. 8 Hobart in overtime, 4-3, last Friday, before falling to No. 5 Adrian, 5-1, on Tuesday.
"I thought that was a great way for our guys to respond after what wasn't their best showing on Tuesday night," said head coach Chris Schultz. "I felt like our guys came to play tonight and really brought a blue-collar mentality to the way they executed."
A back and forth first period only yielded one goal as Oswego forward Chris Waterstreet found the net in the 11th minute. However, the second period was a completely different story as the two teams combined for four goals in less than four minutes to start the period as the Knights used a 5-1 outburst to take a three-goal advantage before the second intermission.
First-year winger Connor Anthoine scored his first collegiate goal 1:44 into the period, before he and classmate Jack Ceglarski assisted sophomore defender Matt Solomon for a tally 24 seconds later to give the Knights a one-goal edge.
Oswego responded 47 second later with a goal by forward Brandon Adams, but Geneseo answered right back on a score by senior centerman Jonathan Sucese to put the Knights ahead for good, 3-2, 3:24 into the period. Tallies by sophomore winger A.J. Sgaraglio and Scharfe in the final four minutes of the period gave Geneseo a commanding 5-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The Lakers looked to mount a comeback starting with a power-play goal by forward Andrew Barton 3:57 into the third, but Scharfe would convert an extra-man opportunity of his own less than three minutes later to make it a 6-3 score 5:46 into the period.
Oswego's Mike Montagna scored a goal at 9:54 to make it a two-goal deficit, but the Knights would suppress the comeback attempt and add an empty net goal by senior forward Zachary Vit with under two minutes to play to seal the victory.
Junior Bryan Haude stopped 27 shots to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Geneseo returns to SUNYAC play on Saturday, hosting Cortland for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff at Wilson Ice Arena.
