Field Hockey Drops OT Heartbreaker At No. 12 Skidmore, 5-4

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Sarah Malinak tallied two goals, but it was No. 12 Skidmore spoiling the Knights' comeback bid in a 5-4 overtime decision, Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 4-2 with just over 10 minutes to play, Geneseo (6-4) pulled even with a pair of tallies by senior forward Kayla DeAngelis and first-year back Liz Doherty in less than a three minute span to force the extra period. However, Skidmore's Kelly Blackhurst, who entered the game ranked sixth nationally in points per game, scored her lone goal of the day 11:26 into overtime to break the Knights' three-game winning streak.

Skidmore (9-2) sprung out to a 2-0 lead just over one minute into the game on a tally by Dani DeGregory 21 seconds in and another by Sam Skott with 1:05 elapsed. Malinak's cut the lead in half in the 16th minute after picking up a loose ball and and scoring on a shot from inside the circle, but the Thoroughbreds regained the two-goal edge in the 32nd minute on a short-range put-back by Pauline Searles as the hosts led 4-2 at intermission.

Malinak struck again in the 59th minute, tapping in a pass from DeAngelis, but DeGregory responded 39 seconds later scoring on a backhanded shot to make it a 5-3 edge with 9:37 remaining in regulation.

DeAngelis' scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season following a scramble in front of the Skidmore net with 7:41 to play, before Doherty tipped home a long-range shot taken by senior back Bridget McGovern on a penalty corner 25 seconds later to knot the game, 4-4, with 6:23 left on the second-half clock.

The Knights had two early chances in overtime, but Skidmore goalkeeper Haley McDougall denied blasts by McGovern on back-to-back penalty corner attempts en route to 10 total saves on the afternoon.

Skidmore won the game as DeGregory broke through the Knights' defense on a counter attack and hit Blackhurst with a pass that she rang off the left post with a hard shot. DeGregory picked up the rebound and shoveld a short pass to Blackhurst which she scored from close range for the deciding goal.

Three of Genseo's losses this season have been to teams currently ranked in the top-12 of this week's National Field Hockey Coach's Association poll (No. 3 William Smith, No. 7 Salisbury, No. 12 Skimore).  The Knights will return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 8) with a 4:00 p.m. faceoff at Hamilton.
