Women's Soccer Comes Up Short At Elmira, 3-2

Box Score

ELMIRA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Jori Semrau and sophomore Kelsey Raschke each tallied second-half goals, but it was host Elmira holding on for a 3-2 victory, Tuesday afternoon.

Geneseo (6-7-4) fell behind in the first half as the Soaring Eagles found the net twice in the first 35 minutes. Emily Kelly collected a pass from Kelsie DeKarski and scored on a 14-yard shot in the 16th minute, before DeKarski dropped a corner kick on the far post that Emily Karpinski headed home from close range in the 35th minute for the two-goal edge before intermission.

Elmira (5-9-1) made it a three-goal advantage in the 56th minute as DeKarski got free behind the Geneseo defense and received a through ball from Kelly that she converted low past Knights' junior keeper Allison Stamp.

The Knights would not go quietly, tallying a pair of goals during a 10-minute run to pull within striking distance with less than eight minutes in regulation. Raschke and senior forward Amanda Gray broke free for a two-on-one attempt versus Elmira goalkeeper Amanda Banner that Raschke finished off from the middle of the box to put the visitors on the board.

Semrau then got open for a shot on goal that went through Banner's legs in the 82nd minute as Geneseo pulled within one, but time ran out on finding the equalizer for the loss.

Geneseo will next be in action on Saturday (Nov. 2) at Cortland in the quarterfinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament. The sixth-seeded Knights and the fourth-seeded Red Dragons are set to tangle at 1:00 p.m. in a rematch of a 1-1 tie earlier in the season.
