Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Sarah Malinak totaled two goals and an assist while senior forward Kayla DeAngelis added two goals to lead the Knights past visiting Nazareth, 6-0, Saturday.
The Knights (10-6) got the offense going early with a goal in the third minute. During a scramble in front of the Golden Flyer net, the Knights made two attempts before DeAngelis was able to convert a shot off of a rebound.
Nine minutes later, DeAngelis made it a 2-0 game with her team-leading 17th goal of the season. DeAngelis and senior forward Kerry Hosford teamed up to go two-on-one against the Nazareth goalie. Hosford returned a pass back to DeAngelis, who tapped it in from close-range.
The Knights extended their lead 20 minutes later with a breakaway towards the Nazareth net in the 32nd minute. After a series of passes, Malinak scored from seven yards out, assisted by senior back Bridget McGovern, who notched her seventh assists on the season.
Geneseo continued to control much of the play in the second half. Off of a penalty corner in the 40th minute, McGovern took a cross from Malinak and banged the ball to the back of the net from long-range. Two minutes later, Hosford added the Knights' fifth goal during a scramble in front of the net.
In the 54th minute, Malinak scored her 15th goal of the season following a scramble in front of the goal. After a shot and save by Nazareth, Malinak took the rebound from mid-air and tucked it past the goalie for Geneseo's final tally of the day.
Nazareth (4-12) was not able to get any shots off as the Knights outshot the Golden Flyers 31-0.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 30) with a 6:00 p.m. faceoff at St. John Fisher.
OTHER NOTE: Geneseo will be seeded second for the SUNYAC Tournament and will take on third-seeded New Paltz in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. Top-seeded Cortland will host the tournament and will face off with fourth-seeded Oneonta at 11:00 a.m. The two advancing teams will play for the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1:30 p.m.
Geneseo has been knocked out of the SUNYAC Tournament by Cortland in the first round for the last two seasons after defeating the Red Dragons, 1-0, in the 2010 championship match to clinch an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
