Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior goalkeeper Julia Sanger made four saves to preserve her seventh shutout of the season as the Knights tied visiting Cortland, 0-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's soccer action, Friday afternoon, at Saratoga Field.
"Every point counts in conference play at this time of year, so while I obviously would have rather had a win, I'll take the tie," said Geneseo head coach Nate Wiley. "We had some opportunities today, but just couldn't find a way to put one in the net. Cortland is a tough team for sure so nothing ever comes easy when you play them."
Both defenses did a good job of limiting any solid scoring opportunities in the first half. In the 10th minute, Knights (4-5-4, 2-2-2 SUNYAC) first-year midfielder Emily Green got in close and put a shot on goal from close range, but Red Dragon keeper Rachel Axt was there to make the save on the right post. In the 38th minute, junior midfielder Jori Semrau spun off a defender at the top of the box to get open for a shot, but Axt again came up with one of her seven stops on the day.
It was more of the same in the second half as neither team could put together a significant scoring attempt. Cortland's (5-4-5, 3-1-3 SUNYAC) best opportunity came in the 56th minute during a scramble close in on Sanger's right, as a shot by forward Kelly Knight was blocked by a defender before Sanger swallowed up another shot by forward Jessica McFadden off the rebound.
In the 60th minute, McFadden looked to break in on Sanger for a one-on-one opportunity, but a trailing Knight defender slowed her up enough that she was only able to get a soft shot on goal from eight yards out.
In the 68th minute, Semrau had another opportunity from 12 yards out following a nice give-and-go pass down the right side, but her attempt sailed right of the goal. In the 75th minute, Green put a heavy, left-footed shot on goal from 20 yards out that Axt turned away as the two teams headed to extra time.
In the ninth minute of the first overtime, first-year forward Laurie Knapp got off a hard shot from the left side just outside the penalty box, but Axt made the save.
Geneseo returns to action tomorrow, hosting Oswego in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Nine Knights will be honored at halftime in a Senior Day Ceremony.
