Box Score Geneseo, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Kayla DeAngelis scored two goals to lead the Knights past visiting Houghton, 4-1, Tuesday.
"I thought that we passed well and did a good job of exectuting on corners during the first half," said head coach Jess Seren. "I also thought Kim Sherman, especially, helped us out by sustaining our attack and making plays to keep our possessions alive."
First-year back Liz Doherty got the offense going early with a goal in the third minute. After a deflected shot off a penalty corner, sophomore midfielder Elena Hingston took the rebound and passed the ball to Doherty for the tap in. DeAngelis made it a 2-0 game in the 22nd minute after a scramble in front of the goal following another corner, taking the assist from Sherman.
In the beginning of the second half, DeAngelis added another tally, bringing the ball into the circle and scoring from six yards out in the 40th minute.
Minutes after a Houghton goalie change, Geneseo (8-5, 4-0 SUNYAC) had a chance to extend its lead with a penalty stroke. DeAngelis took the opportunity, but it was blocked by backup goalie Carly Congilosi.
Geneseo continued its offensive attack as sophomore forward Sarah Malinak scored a goal for the eighth-straight game off an assist from senior midfielder Katie Farley to the center of the net in the 53rd minute.
A minute later, Houghton (3-9) responded with its first goal of the day. After the Highlanders' first shot attempt, Colleen Sullivan took the rebound and banged a high shot right past sophomore goalkeeper Dayna Mercer to spoil the shut-out attempt.
The Knights continue home field play by hosting the only other unbeaten SUNYAC team, Cortland, on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 1:00 p.m..
