Sickle Cell Trait Documentation and Submission

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is now requiring all student athletes to provide proof of Sickle Cell Trait testing prior to participating for the 2022/2023 school year. This documentation must be submitted prior to any team practice or function.

The following options are available to confirm Sickle Cell Trait status:

  1. Access newborn screening results from your birth record through your birth hospital or pediatrician.

  2. Ask your current healthcare provider to request NYS newborn screening results from the Newborn Screening Program.

  3. Obtain a prescription from your healthcare provider and get tested.

  4. If the above options have been exhausted, you can make an appointment with Student Health and Counseling for testing if absolutely necessary. *Contact the Athletic Trainers for further instruction

To obtain results for students who are currently NYS residents but who were not born in NYS, we recommend contacting the newborn screening program in the State where the child was born to learn about their current policies for releasing results of newborn screening tests.

Once the results have been obtained you will need to provide them to the SUNY Geneseo Athletic Training staff by August 1st.
