GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team survived a back-and-forth battle with Penn State Behrend on Tuesday afternoon, rallying from a doubles-point deficit to escape with a 4-3 win and move to 4-0 on the season.
Behrend took the doubles point, winning two of the three flights. Geneseo's lone doubles win came at second doubles, where Samantha Rava and Rachel Molloy cruised, 6-1. First doubles (Natalie Pipes/JoAnn Catalano) and third doubles (Talia Wutz/Alex Comiskey) both went the other way, 6-1 and 6-2 respectively, giving Behrend the point.
Geneseo answered by taking four of six singles flights. Rachel Molloy was dominant at third singles, winning 6-0, 6-3, and Lauren Levatino cruised at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-1. Talia Wutz and JoAnn Catalano each turned in shutout performances at fifth and sixth singles, both winning 6-0, 6-0.
The two matches Geneseo dropped were hard-fought. At first singles, Natalie Pipes fell in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (5). At second singles, Samantha Rava split the first two sets before dropping a deciding match tiebreak (10-8).
The four singles wins were enough to overcome the doubles point, and the Knights closed out the match 4-3 to remain unbeaten on the season. The Knights return to Empire 8 action on Friday, taking on St. John Fisher at 4 p.m.
