GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team opened up Empire 8 action on Saturday, Sept. 6, and fell to Hartwick in a rematch of last years championship match, 5-2. The Knights fall to 0-2 on the season while Hartwick moves to 3-0.
Samantha Rava and
Rachel Molloy got doubles action started off strong with a big 7-5 win at first doubles, but Geneseo was unable to pick up the doubles point for the match after falling at second and third doubles. Singles play saw multiple close matches, with four of the six going to a third set.
Natalie Pipes won at first singles, 4-6 7-5 4-0 (def), then Rava picked up a second point for the Knights at second singles with a 6-1 6-3 victory. Molloy nearly pulled out a third point for the Knights at third singles, but fell in the third set 7-5.
Joann Catalano and
Talia Wutz also forced their matches to three sets at third and fourth singles, respectively, but couldn't pull out the wins.
Lauren Levatino rounded out singles play in the six spot, falling 7-5 6-3.
Geneseo will return to action at home on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. against Cortland.
