UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's track and field team traveled to Utica for the Empire 8 Championship Meet this weekend, and came away with the program's first Empire 8 title. This championship also marks the program's eighth-straight conference title and 15th overall. The Knights totaled 265 points in the meet, while Nazareth finished second with 118.
DAY ONE RECAP:
In the pentathlon, Geneseo recorded 25 points behind
Janelle Eckl,
Lanna Wandy,
Elaina Flaitz, and
Mackenzie Kubat. Eckl placed first, recording a total of 3,646 points, while Wandy took second with 3,347, and Flaitz and Kubat earning fifth and sixth place finishes.
Sierra Doody posted a new championship meet record in the mile, posting a time of 5:00.33, while
Jillian O'Rourke, Kaitlyn Grossman, and
Shelby Boise chipped in another eight points for Geneseo by finishing in the top eight.
Brynn Mooney kept the winning ways going in the 400m, finishing first at 57.01, while
Nicole Gretzinger and
Sophia Barclay also finished in the top eight. Geneseo was dominant in the 5000m event, with
Penelope Greene leading the way by recording a facility and meet record at 16:49.73, while
Lilly Fowler-Conner,
Annika Hurley,
Gabby McCarthy,
Ann Brennan, and
Isabel Marzec took second through sixth, respectively.
In the field events, the Knights picked up 17 points in the shot put after
Payton Mehalick placed second at 12.27m, and
Zoe Connor and
Lauren Jaklitsch place fourth and fifth, respectively.
Jillian Ambler added a first place finish for Geneseo in the long jump by recording a meet record distance of 5.71m, and
Kayla Huba chipped in five more points by finishing fourth. Gretzinger rounded out the field events for Geneseo by placing fifth in the pole vault.
DAY TWO RECAP:
Sierra Doody captured her second first place finish of the meet, earning the top spot in the 800m with a time of 2:12.31, which set a new conference and facility record.
Jillian Ambler and
Brynn Mooney added to the Knights total by finishing second in the 60m hurdles and 60m, respectively. Mooney then added to her dominant performance at the meet with a first place finish in the 200m at 24.97, a conference and facility record, while Ambler took fourth. Geneseo put on an impressive showing in the 3000m, finishing first through seventh place.
Penelope Greene led the way with a meet record time of 9:52.37, while
Lilly Fowler-Conner,
Ann Brennan,
Gabby McCarthy,
Jillian O'Rourke,
Annika Hurley and
Ari Reback took second through seventh, respectively. Rounding out the track events was the 4x400 relay team of
Janelle Eckl,
Nicole Gretzinger, Doody, and
Sophia Barclay who placed first with a meet and facility record time of 3:56.71.
Zoe Connor highlighted the field events for the Knights, placing second in the weight throw at 17.74m, while teammate
Lauren Jaklitsch took third.
Elaina Flaitz and
Gigi Ferro earned top eight finishes in the high jump, while
