Women's Swimming & Diving Win First Empire 8 Conference Championship

WEBSTER, N.Y. - The Geneseo Women's Swimming & Diving team won their first Empire 8 Conference championship, making it their 17th straight conference title. Alise Hale was named Women's Swimmer of the Meet thanks to her great performance this week. Coaches Paul Dotterwiech, Noah Farmer and Shaun Austin were also named Coaching and Diving Staff of the Year. Hannah Brockman was awarded the Empire 8 Torchbearer Award, which is presented to the competing athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.  

DAY ONE: 

Abby Funk opened the meet for the Knights, taking first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.75. Teammates Hannah Brockman, Thalia Marquez and Emily McCord followed close behind in second, fourth and fifth place respectively. Alise Hale and Makayla French took second and third in the 200-yard IM, touching the wall at 2:09.66 and 2:10.07. In the 50-yard freestyle, Alex Sotek claimed the top spot with a time of 23.28 while Nina Chicatelli took third with her time of 24.22. The 400-yard Medley Relay team of Sotek, Hale, Chicatelli and Emily Thomas dominated, winning by 12 seconds with their time of 3:47.49.  

DAY TWO:  

Geneseo remained on top on day two, starting with Alise Hale, Alex Sorek and Sarah Cooper taking the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly, with times of 55.18, 55.78 and 58.38 respectively. Makayla French took second in the 400-yard IM and Karly Bray finished in fourth. In the 200-yard freestyle, Abby Funk nabbed her second first place finish of the week with a time of 1:54.66, followed again by Hannah Brockman in second with her time of 1:55.83. The 200-yard freestyle relay team finished in first place with Erin Johannsen, Courtney Sorbello, Sotek, and Chicatelli finishing at 1:34.83, four seconds ahead of the competition. In the1-meter dive, Lydia Benjamin, Aurora Jacobson and Lauren Savage took second, third and fourth place, scoring 424.30, 407.05 and 393.15 respectively.  

DAY THREE:  

The 200-yard medley relay team of Corutney Sorbello, Alise Hale, Alex Sotek and Emily  Thomas took first, touching at 1:43.16. Hale followed with her second first place finish of the meet in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing at 2:01.97. Maeve Wright and Makayla Frech took second and third with their times of 2:09.22 and 2:09.83 respectively. Nina Chicatelli finished in first in the 100-yard backstroke, with a final time of 57.25, while Sorbello took third place, touching at 59.09. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Emily Thomas took the top spot with her time of 1:04.38 and Emily Cooper close behind in third place. The 800-yard freestyle relay dominated with their time of 7:26.25, with Abby Funk, Hannah Brockman, Emily McCord and Thalia Marquez finishing a full 8 seconds ahead of the next team.  

DAY FOUR: 

Abby Funk opened the day with an incredible first place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, finishing at 17:19.75, followed by Hannah Brockman who second place with her time of 17:27.03. Alex Sotek came out on top in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 51.97 while Erin Johannsen took third place with a time of 53.46. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Emily Thomas took second place with a time of 2:21.58 as the only Geneseo athlete competing in the finals. Lydia Benjamin scored 451.95 in the 3-meter dive, earning second place at the meet, while Aurora Jacobson and Lauren Savage placed fourth and fifth respectively. The 400-yard freestyle relay team finished the day with a dominant performance, as Alex Sotek, Courtney Sorbello, Erin Johannsen and Nina Chicatelli took first place with their time of 3:29.96.
