Box Score BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team earned the program's first trip to the SUNYAC Championship match since the 2017 season on Friday evening, knocking off #2 seeded Cortland, 5-3. The Knights avenged their loss to the Red Dragons from earlier in the fall, and will take on top-seeded New Paltz for the SUNYAC title on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. in Binghamton, N.Y.
The Knights kicked off the action in doubles, and earned two big victories at first and second doubles.
Samantha Rava and
Alex Galle fought their way to an 8-6 win at second doubles, while
Natalie Pipes and
Rory Tobin cruised to an 8-3 win at first doubles.
Abigail Rockwood and
Talia Wutz teamed up at third doubles and fell 8-2.
In singles play, Galle continued her impressive semifinal performance by dominating at second singles to earn the 6-0 6-2 victory. Tobin joined her in the win column at third singles, picking up a 6-3 6-2 win to put the Knights within one point of the win. Rava came through for Geneseo at fourth singles, pulling out a first set tiebreak victory 7-6 (3) and then used the momentum in the second set to win 6-3 and send the Knights to the championship match.
Katie Kujawa fell at sixth singles in a hard fought match, 7-6 (6) 6-3, and Rockwood came up short at fifth singles, while Pipes match at first singles was headed to a third set when Geneseo secured their fifth point.
The Knights will take on New Paltz in the championship match, the team they defeated in the finals every year between 2011 and 2017. The match can be streamed from the SUNYAC,
