BUFFALO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's swimming and diving team opened up its 2023-24 campaign with a convincing 243-56 win over Cortland at Erie Community College.
The Knights kicked things off with an impressive performance in the 200 yard medley relay, as
Maya Marcyan,
Emily Thomas,
Alise Hale, and
Alex Sotek teamed up to post a time of 1:50.51 in firt place, and the team of
Nina Chicatelli,
Mackenzie Fischer,
Grace Kanaley, and
Amaya DiGiovanni just barely behind them in second place at 1:50.83.
In the 1000 yard freestyle,
Hannah Brockman and
Carolyn Zedack paced the competition, with Brockman in first at 10:50.52 and Zedack behind her at 11:28.77.
Madison Sargent kept the winning ways going in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.11, and teammate
Emily McCord in second at 2:04.66. The Knights then swept the top three spots in the 100 yard backstroke, with Chicatelli in first, Marcyan in second, and
Ashley Felber in third.
In the 100 yard breaststroke, Thomas earned the top spot at 1:08.15, while Fischer was barely out toched in second at 1:08.88. Hale then added another nine points to Geneseo's score with a dominant performance in the 200 yard butterfly at 2:14.10. Kanaley earned an exciting win in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.86, and then Sargent took first in the 100 yard freestyle at 55.51. Marcyan continued the dominant performance by the Knights in the 200 yard backstroke, taking first at 2:16.48, while Thomas picked up her third win of the day in the 200 yard breaststroke.Â
Brockman picked up her second long distance event win of the meet by taking first in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.04, beating out second place by 13 seconds. Hale kept up the pace in the 100 yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 58.80. Fischer led a trio of Knights in spots 1, 2, 3 in the 200 yard IM, taking first at 2:21.36. Behind Fischer was
Sinead Devaney and
Makayla French. Geneseo capped off the swimming events with a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay, with the team of
Emily McCord,
Alex Sotek,
Grace Kanaley, and
Madison Sargent earning the top time at 1:41.33.
In diving,
Alexandra Pucci-Schaefer took first in both the 1 and 3-meter dives. Pucci Schaefer scored a 210.15 in the one-meter dive and a 201.70 in the three-meter.
Lydia Benjamin took second in the three-meter dive at 199.20.
The Knights will return to the pool on October 21 when they host Alfred St. at Erie Community College at 1:30 p.m.
