AMHERST, MA - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team was defeated by Amherst (Ma.) 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. It was the third time in the last four years and the fourth time in six tournament appearances that the Knights have advanced to the second round but lost. Geneseo also fell to Amherst in 2012.
"We put up a good fight and our players felt they played good tennis," said Coach Jim Chen. "The score does not reflect the intensity nor the fight that the our players showed. We're disappointed but going home with our heads high."
The host Lord Jeffs (14-4), ranked seventh in the nation and third in the Northeast Region, took command of the match with three wins in the opening doubles portion. Junior Marylen Santos and senior Minxuan Yuan had the closest match, extending Amherst's number-one doubles team of Vickie Ip/Avery Wagman to 8-5. Ip is ranked fifth in the Northeast in singles and fifth in doubles with her usual partner Sue Ghosh.
Amherst picked up the two singles wins necessary to close out the match at number-three and number-five. Junior Cat Crummey was the only Geneseo player with a lead in the matches that did not finish, up 4-3 in the first set at number-two singles.
Geneseo, ranked No. 15 in the Northeast Region, finished the season at 15-4 and made its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and sixth in program history. It was the 17th straight winning season for the Knights and the 15 wins were tied for third-most in a season in program history.
