Women's Tennis Drops Match to Rochester, 7-2

Mendon, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior Minxuan Yuan and junior Marylen Santos teamed for a win at number-one doubles, and junior Cat Crummey captured her number-two singles match in a 7-2 loss to Rochester on Thursday. The Yellowjackets prevailed in all three matches that went to tiebreakers, providing key points in the winning margin.

Santos and Yuan were paired for the first time this season and captured their match 8-3. The team of Crummey and senior Amanda Rosati suffered their first loss at number-two doubles and in the key match in the doubles portion, at number-three doubles, junior Mai Hashimoto and first-year Anika Pornpitaksuk were defeated 9-8 at number-three doubles, 7-5 in the tiebreaker.

Rochester (5-6) went on to win five of the six singles, with Crummey (number-two) the only Geneseo victor. Santos (number-one) and M. Yuan (number-six) both lost the first set in their respective matches, rallied to win the second, but dropped the subsequent decisive tiebreaker.

"The match obviously turned on those three tiebreakers," said Coach Jim Chen. "A few bounces our way and it could have been 5-4 in our favor. This was a very close match and losing through tiebreakers made it a tough loss for us."

The third Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll of the spring was released earlier on Thursday. In the Northeast Region, Rochester was ranked #17 and the Knights two slots behind at #19.

The match was played indoors at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club due to the rainy weather. The Knights (11-3) have two matches scheduled for this weekend. They will host New York University at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 10. On Sunday they travel to Hamilton to face the Continentals.
