Women's Tennis Opens Defense of SUNYAC title with Win Over Plattsburgh

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the SUNYAC Championship with a 5-0 win over Plattsburgh Friday. After the Knights swept the opening doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead, senior Marylen Santos and junior Maggie Hale captured their singles matches to claim the victory. In the conference tournament format, play ends after the decisive fifth match is won.

The Knights, the No. 1 seed from the West Division, raised their record to 9-0 and will play Oneonta on Saturday morning at 12 p.m. The Red Dragons, the East Division's No. 2 seed, defeated Oswego 5-0 on Friday. Geneseo and Oneonta met earlier this season, with the Knights taking a 9-0 win at home. The winner of tomorrow's match will advance to Sunday's final.

Geneseo has captured the last four SUNYAC titles, and six of the last seven. The consecutive championship streak has all been in the team play format, which the SUNYAC switched to in 2011. In each of those previous four title runs, the Knights met and defeated Plattsburgh.

The singles victory for Santos was the 60th of her career, moving her into a tie for third on the Geneseo career record board with former teammate Amanda Rosati '15. Santos is now one win behind Sarah Shields '13 for second all-time and three wins behind Anna Lehit '10, who sits atop the list with 63 career singles victories. Earlier this season Santos climbed to the top of the Geneseo career record lists in doubles and combined wins.
