New Paltz, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo juniors Marylen Santos and Cat Crummey teamed for the win at number-one doubles and also captured their respective singles matches to key Geneseo's 7-2 win over previously-unbeaten New Paltz on Friday. The Knights moved to 3-0 in the SUNYAC and 4-0 on the season.
"As we suspected, this was our most competitive match to date. We were fortunate to come away with the win as New Paltz is a very good team, said Coach Jim Chen. "Most pleasing was the way we dominated in doubles, opening with three wins. That made it much easier for us—we only needed to win two singles to capture the match. A 7-2 margin is a good accomplishment against such a strong team.
The duos of senior Amanda Rosati/sophomore Karli Hollins and senior Minxuan Yuan/sophomore Maggie Hale also claimed their doubles matches, helping the Knights to a 3-0 lead heading into the singles. In the individual matches, senior Dexuan Yuan (number-four) and junior Mai Hashimoto (number-six) joined Santos (number-one) and Crummey (number-two) as victors.
"Our singles winners were excellent today and worthy of mention," said Chen. "They played their hearts out and everyone of them executed some difficult shots in their matches."
The two teams have met in the three previous SUNYAC tournament finals, with each contest going to the Knights. Last season, Geneseo captured the title with a 5-1 win, and also claimed the regular-season match, 7-2. New Paltz has already clinched the SUNYAC East Division's top seed for the upcoming conference tournament, and with the Knights leading the West Division, yet another rematch is a good possibility.
Geneseo continues its trip with a match Saturday, Sep. 13, against Oneonta. The Knights will finish their matches against SUNYAC West Division opponents on Wednesday, Sep. 17, when they travel to Fredonia.
