Women's Soccer Drops NCAA Tournament First Round Contest to Mary Washington, 3-0

GENEVA, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior goalkeeper Julia McDonald made three saves, but it was Mary Washington advancing from the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament with a 3-0 victory, Saturday, at William Smith.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Mary Washington junior midfielder Brielle Mitchell scored the game's first goal in the eighth minute, tucking away a pass across the box from first-year midfielder Mikaela O'Fallon.
  • The Eagles (12-10-0) tacked on another tally just five minutes later on its third corner of the game when sophomore forward Abby Zimmerman found the net. McDonald got her right hand to the ball, but the header from six yards away found the top left corner of the frame.
  • First-year forward Faye Higgins was credited for the Knights' first shot-on-goal in the 31st minute of play, a volley just outside the 18-yard box, but it was saved as Mary Washington took its 2-0 advantage into the break.
  • The Eagles added to their lead ten minutes into the second half when senior midfielder Malorie Joseph fired a right-footed shot from 20 yards away past the outstretched McDonald, making it 3-0.
  • The Knights had their best scoring opportunity of the game in the final minute when first-year forward McKinley Skala placed a six-yard shot on-goal, but it was stopped by a diving save from Mary Washington first-year goalkeeper Allison Nork.
