Women's Soccer Defeats Cortland, 1-0

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Laurie Knapp scored her first goal of the season to lead the Knights to a 1-0 victory over visiting Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Saturday afternoon.

Both teams strung together a number of offensive opportunities in the first half but neither was able to find the back of the net as the Red Dragons entered halftime with a 5-4 edge in shots.

In the 78th minute, Knapp scored on a header off a free kick from sophomore back Patricia Galan. Geneseo was awarded the kick following a Cortland foul just outside the penalty area on the right side of the field.

The Knights' best opportunity to add to their lead came in the 81st minute. Senior midfielder Marissa Benson's shot from the top of the box just sailed off the cross bar after sophomore forward Leah Greene laid the ball back from the middle of the penalty area.

Cortland (5-10, 1-7 SUNYAC) finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots while first-year keeper Emily Janiszewski made seven saves to preserve the shutout.

Prior to the game, there was a brief senior day ceremony to honor the Class of 2016, which included: Benson, forward Kelsey Raschke, midfielder Stephanie Clookey, midfielder Danielle Sheehan and back Samantha Sherman.

The Knights (10-3-1, 5-2 SUNYAC) return to action next Friday, Oct. 23, at Plattsburgh for a 3 p.m. kick-off.
