GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Emily Green recorded her team-high sixth goal of the season the lead the Knights to a 3-0 victory over visiting New Paltz in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Friday afternoon.
"It's always great to get a win at home in conference play," said head coach Nate Wiley. "We didn't take care of the ball as well as I would of liked so we'll need to clean that up for tomorrow. Fridays are always tricky because you want a positive result yet you want to make sure the team is prepared to turn around and play again the next day. Those who came off the bench to give our starters some rest today only made us better."
Geneseo got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute when Green scored a penalty kick into the left corner of the net after sophomore forward Leah Greene was taken down in the box.
The Knights tacked on another goal just 52 seconds later. In the 26th minute, Greene notched a score from two yards out into the left half of the net off an assist from junior midfielder Carolanne Murphy.
In the 80th minute, Murphy knocked in a rebound to seal the win for Geneseo. Murphy got a foot on the ball following New Paltz's keeper saving a header from sophomore forward Audrey Reid off a corner kick from junior back Patricia Galan.
The Knights outshot the Hawks (2-9, 1-2 SUNYAC), 22-3, while first-year keeper Emily Janiszewski made two saves to preserve her sixth shutout of the season.
Geneseo (6-2-1, 2-1 SUNYAC) continues conference play tomorrow at home opposite Oneonta. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
