FREDONIA, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Emily Green scored in the final minute of play to lift the Knights over host Fredonia, 1-0, in both teams' first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest of the season, Friday.
"Today we battled and found a way to win in the end but we'll have to turn it around and play better tomorrow," said head coach Nate Wiley. "We outplayed Fredonia for a majority of the match but we weren't sharp in the final third and that final pass wasn't on for us. We deserved the win and I felt like we played better than them today."
Both teams strung together several offensive opportunities in the first half but neither was able to get on the board as Geneseo entered halftime with a 6-5 edge in shots.
In the 89th minute, Green knocked in a goal from right in front of the net after handling a pass from sophomore forward Leah Greene. Green has now scored four of the team's last five goals.
The Knights (4-1-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) outshot the Blue Devils (1-7-0, 0-1 SUNYAC), 22-7, on the afternoon as first-year keeper Emily Janiszewski finished with two saves to preserve her fifth shutout of the season.
Geneseo returns to action tomorrow at Buffalo State for a game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
