Softball Comeback Spurs Sweep of Oswego

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior outfielder Hannah Elmer finished 6-for-7 with five RBI, leading the Knights to a sweep of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Oswego, defeating the Lakers, 7-5, in game one and earning an 8-0 win in game two. 

GAME ONE - Geneseo 7, Oswego 5

  • Oswego pulled ahead with a run in the top of the first inning, but senior outfielder Alyssa Persich scored after a single from senior outfielder Danni Napoli to tie the game. 
  • The Lakers went ahead again with a run in the second and two more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, but the Knights responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior infielder Abbey Whitney drove home Napoli with an RBI single and senior catcher Taylor Fedor added an RBI single to plate Elmer, drawing the Knights within one. 
  • Oswego added an insurance run in the fifth inning, but Elmer pushed the Knights ahead with a bases loaded double, driving in three Knights to take a 6-5 lead. Senior infielder Kylie Papagelos added a run in the sixth as the Knights held off the Lakers for a game one victory. 

GAME TWO - Geneseo 8, Oswego 0 (5 inn.)

  • Junior pitcher Ashlyn Kersch allowed just two hits and rung up four strikeouts as the Knights shutout the Laker offense in game two. Napoli opened the scoring with an RBI double while Elmer and Papagelos each chipped in RBI singles, giving the Knights a 3-0 lead after one inning. 
  • Elmer and Whitney each tagged RBI singles in the second inning to make it 5-0. Geneseo added a single run in the fourth and plated two more in the fifth to earn the walk-off run-rule victory. 


  • Kersch twirled her second-consecutive shutout and fourth of the season to reduce her ERA to a team-best 1.29. The Knights have shutout their opponent eight times this season.
  • With five RBI in Thursday's games, Elmer becomes the first Knight to reach 30 RBI in a season since Samantha Trapasso (45) in 2013. 
  • Persich finished with three hits to raise her career total to 173 hits, good for third in program history while Napoli recorded four hits to reach 159 career hits, tied for fourth overall.


Geneseo will host Cortland in another SUNYAC doubleheader on Saturday with games beginning at 12:00 p.m.
