Geneseo, N.Y. – Senior Corrin Spallone notched wins in both games as the SUNY Geneseo softball team swept a SUNYAC doubleheader from Brockport on Saturday, 8-7, 6-5. First-year Emily Martin had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth in each game. Junior Jenna Phillips went six-for-eight on the day, scoring four runs and driving in one. The Knights (10-9, 5-3 SUNYAC) have captured six games in a row and seven of their last eight.
Game 1: Geneseo 8, Brockport 7 (9 innings)
Phillips had four hits and scored three runs, while junior Cat Krok had three RBI to lead the Knights in Game 1.
The opener was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams combined for 23 hits. Brockport (9-11, 2-4) broke on top with two in the second, but Geneseo answered in the bottom of the inning. Martin led off with a bunt single, followed by Phillips' double to the wall in left. Krok scored both with a two-base hit over the right-fielder's head. After an out, a single by sophomore Abby Dennett and a walk to senior Ashley Fillmore loaded the bases. Seniors Sami Brown and Kayleigh Blersch drew run-scoring walks, sandwiched around an out, to plate two more runners and give the Knights a 4-2 lead.
Geneseo built the lead to 6-3 through four innings with single runs in the third and fourth, the latter set up by a double by junior Courtney Budynas, a Martin single and walks to Blersch and Krok.
A Golden Eagle three-run home run knotted the game at six in the top of the fifth, and both teams scored single runs in the sixth frame to go to extra innings knotted at seven. The Knights had a runner on third and a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh, but Blersch's hard-hit liner to right-centerfield was tracked down for the third out.
After Spallone stranded two runners in the top of the ninth, the Knights scored the game winner in the home half. With one out, Brown singled up the middle. Budynas walked, advancing Brown into scoring position. With two out and a 1-1 count, Martin looped a soft liner just inside the left-field line to score Brown with the winning run. It was Martin's third hit of the game.
Spallone (6-4) went the distance, allowing 11 hits, striking out five and allowing only one walk.
Game 2: Geneseo 6, Brockport 5 (9 innings)
Brown, Budynas, Blersch and Phillips each had two hits and Spallone again went the distance to lead the Knights in the second game. Dennett had a crucial game-tying hit in the bottom of the eighth before a Martin sacrifice fly won the game in the ninth.
Geneseo built a early 4-0 lead with three in the first and one in the third. In the leadoff frame, a Fillmore double and Brown walk put two on and Blersch cleared the bases with a home run off the foul pole in left field. In the third, after Budynas got on board with a single, Blersch advanced her with a sacrifice bunt and Phillips drove her home with a single.
The Knights took a 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh and looked to close out the game, but four hits, including a solo home run, and two Geneseo errors helped the Golden Eagles tie the game. Brockport had the lead run on second with one out, but Spallone retired the final two hitters of the inning.
Geneseo had runners on second and third with two out on the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't push across the winning run. The Golden Eagles took the lead with a single run in the eighth and in the bottom of the inning, the Knights found themselves down to their last out. With Phillips on third, pinch-hitter Dennett drove a sharp single through the hole at short to continue the contest.
In the home half of the ninth, Brown led off with a bunt single. Budynas advanced her to second with a well-executed sacrifice bunt and Brown moved to third on a Blersch single. With bases loaded, Martin hit a fly ball to left field and Brown beat the throw home for the winner.
Spallone (7-4) scattered seven hits, striking out six and walking two.
The Knights return to action on Monday, April 13 with a home doubleheader against Alfred St.
