Softball Drops Two Games at Fredonia in SUNYAC Opener

Fredonia, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team opened its SUNYAC season by dropping a doubleheader at Fredonia, 6-5 and 10-9. The Knights' record stands at 3-8 overall, 0-2 in the SUNYAC.

Fredonia (5-8, 2-0) rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the opener, scoring two in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Knights jumped on the scoreboard early, putting up three runs in the first inning. A double by senior Sami Brown, followed by a walk to junior Courtney Budynas, set the table for first-year Emily Martin. With two outs, Martin doubled down the left-field line, scoring Brown. Junior Jenna Phillips then brought home Budynas and Martin with a single.

Geneseo added a run in the second, again with two outs. Senior Ashley Fillmore walked and scored when Brown followed with her second double of the game. The duo combined for another single tally in the fourth. Fillmore singled with two outs and Brown followed with her third hit of the game, a bunt single. Fillmore advanced to third on the play, then scored the unearned run on a throwing error by the Blue Devils' pitcher.

Down by four, Fredonia rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Four hits cut the Geneseo lead to 5-3, but with the tying runs on base and one out, Spallone struck out pinch hitter Lindsay Forness and junior third baseman Cat Krok threw out Kate Nicholson at first when the Fredonia leadoff hitter attempted to bunt her way on.

The Blue Devils pushed across the winning runs in the home half of the seventh. After three singles brought Fredonia within one, the Knights had the Blue Devils down to their last out, but a fielding error allowed the tying run and set the stage for Maggie Paras' game-winning single.

Starting pitcher senior Corrin Spallone (2-4) allowed six runs (three earned) on 13 hits, struck out four and walked none. Senior Kayleigh Blersch was on base three times, with two singles and a walk.

In the nightcap, Geneseo again built an early lead only to see the home team come from behind. After spotting the Blue Devils a single tally in the second, the Knights scored one in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth to build a 7-2 cushion. The lone marker in the third was on a home run by Budynas, her second of the year. The runs in the fourth were built on a double by Phillips, a RBI-single by Fillmore and a single by Brown that scored two. Doubles by Blersch and Phillips and a two-run single by junior Mikayla Moore were the big hits in the fifth.

Fredonia put across five runs in the bottom of the fifth, all after two were out, to tie the game at 7. The Knights immediately responded with a pair in their half of the sixth. A single by Budynas and walk to Blersch put runners on and after a fielders choice advanced them into scoring position, Moore plated both with a single.

The Blue Devils rallied in the bottom of the frame. After a leadoff single, sophomore Alexis Kidder relieved Moore and Fredonia tallied two to once again knot the score. After the Knights failed to score in the top of the seventh, the Blue Devils loaded the bases on a single and two walks. With two outs, Forness hit the game-winning single.

Moore went three-for-four in the game with four RBI. Budynas, Blersch and Phillips each added two hits apiece. On the hill Moore gave up eight runs (three earned) on nine hits, striking out four and walking two. Kidder (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks.

For the day, Brown went four-for-eight, with three RBI; Blersch went four-for-six, with two doubles, and Philllips went three-for-six, with two doubles, two runs and four RBI.

The Knights' next scheduled action is Thursday, April 2 as they travel to Rochester to take on the Yellowjackets. Game time is 3 p.m.
