Softball Falls To No. 9 Luther and Smith In Clermont, Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - SUNY Geneseo fell to No. 9 Luther (Iowa), 9-0, in six innings and Smith College (Ma.), 3-1, on the second day of its spring break trip, Monday.

Geneseo held Luther to just two runs through four innings, but a five-run sixth-inning secured the 12th-straight win for the Norse.

First-year Holly Drasser and sophomores Allie Dananberg, Jacqueline Santilli and Marisa Motisi each recorded a hit for the Knights in the setback.

In Geneseo's second game opposite the Pioneers, neither team recorded a hit until the third inning as a fielding error brought home senior Joanna Giordano for Smith to make it 1-0. After the Pioneers tacked on another run in the fourth, a Giordano single to right field drove in a run to make it a 3-0 game going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Knights got on the scoreboard in the fifth after first-year Claire VanNewkirk grounded out to second base, allowing first-year Emily Martin to score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Martin walked and junior Jenna Phillips singled to shortstop but the Knights were unable to drive home any more runs to complete the comeback.

Geneseo (1-3) will face Luther again tomorrow at 9 a.m. before taking on Amherst College at 11 a.m.
