GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore Isaac Garcia-Cassani and cross country head coach Dan Moore received regional awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as voted on by the NCAA Division III coaches, announced Wednesday.
Garcia-Cassani was named Atlantic Region Male Athlete of the Year while Coach Moore landed Atlantic Region Women's Coach of the Year honors.
Garcia-Cassani won the men's individual title at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, completing the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25:11.1 to best a field of 288 runners by nine seconds. Prior to the regional championship, Garcia-Cassani ran to first place at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships with a time of 25:00.7.
Also the winner of the Oswego Invitational (Sept. 12), Garcia-Cassani finished runner-up at the Mike Woods Invitational (Oct. 3) and fourth at Williams' Purple Valley Classic (Sept. 26), where the field featured seven nationally ranked teams at the time.
In his first year at the helm of the program, Moore led the women's cross country team to four first-place finishes this season, including the SUNYAC and NCAA Atlantic Region Championships. The Knights compiled 26 points to out-distance Oneonta (58) and capture its fifth-consecutive conference title and 15th in the last 16 seasons while the squad's Atlantic Region crown was its eighth overall and first since winning five straight from 2004-08.
Under Moore's guidance, junior Sara Rosenzweig won the SUNYAC individual title and was also the team's top finisher at the Atlantic Regional with a seventh-place showing.
The Knights are currently ranked sixth nationally and will compete at the NCAA Division III Championships hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh this Saturday at Lake Breeze Golf Club. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CST) while the men will take off at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
