Men's Cross Country Runs To First Place At NCAA Atlantic Regional

MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore Isaac Garcia-Cassani bested a field of 288 runners to lead the Knights to first place out of 45 teams at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Geneseo at Letchworth State Park, Saturday.

The finish automatically qualifies the Knights for their 13th-consecutive NCAA Division III Championship race as the top-two teams in the region earn automatic berths while the other finishers will be considered for at-large berths distributed throughout the nation's eight total regions.

Geneseo placed five runners in the top-20 to record 54 points and come away with the win while St. Lawrence (68), Hamilton (118), Ithaca (194) and NYU (199) rounded out the top-five teams.

Garcia-Cassani covered the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25:11.1 as junior Alfredo Mazzuca crossed the finish line in fifth (25:26.2). Junior Alex Kramer finished 14th (25:47.3) while junior Travis Briggs was right behind him in 15th (25:47.7) and senior Sean Fischer came in 19th (25:55.7) to round out the Knights' five scoring runners.

Senior Brendan Wortner took 31st place (26:11.7) and junior John Panus placed 70th (26:49.1).

Geneseo, which entered the weekend ranked sixth in the latest USTFCCCA national poll and first in the Atlantic Region, will be in action next Saturday, Nov. 21, at the NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winnecone, Wis. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
