ITHACA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's swimming & diving team finished second in four out of five relay events to earn second place out of 11 teams at the Ithaca Winter Invitational over the weekend.
Junior Mitchell Phelps swam a leg on all four second-place relays and finished third in the 200 fly and fifth in the 100 fly to lead the Knights. Phelps teamed with juniors Kaz Sampson and John Wilson as well as sophomore Will Eng to form the 200 medley relay that finished second in 1:33.10. The same quartet finished second in the 400 medley relay as well, touching up in 3:27.55. Phelps, senior Matthew Modelewski, sophomore Harry Harkins and first-year Sean McClellan combined to form the second-place 800 free relay, finishing in 6:57.07. Sampson also finished third in the 100 breast, posting a program record time of 56.95.
First-year Corey Wirth finished fifth in both diving events, scoring 429.45 in the one-meter and 422.50 off the three-meter board.
The Knights accumulated 1,206 points, finishing in second place behind NCAA Division I Cornell, and beating out regional rivals Rochester, Nazareth and Ithaca as well as NCAA Division II members Le Moyne and Shippensburg.
Geneseo will swim again on Jan. 19 when they host Case Western Reserve in a dual meet.
